Virtual Reality for

Cooperative Work

Under review as of June 97
The CSCW group at GMD is exploring the use of virtual reality in the support of distributed Co-workers. Currently we are using VRML to provide Virtual Reality interfaces to other GMD/CSCW projects such as POLITeam and BSCW. Our two main themes are:
-Visualisation of Shared data. Here we have papers on:
Critique of Approaches to Interaction and Visualisation in Distributed Collaborative Environments

A novel visualisation technique Abstract Data Shadows for awareness and orientation in shared 3D information spaces.

A BSCW Workspace as a VRML world. Also discussed in the ECSCW 95 workshop paper: Virtual Places of Real Work

A POLITeam desktop as a virtual room. This world has been demo'ed at CeBIT 96 in Hannover and is currently being shown at the G7 meeting in South Africa.

-Support for the distribution of shared VR Worlds
In our VRML95 paper we explore how Multi-User VRML can be supported.
We also collaborate with the Co-Tech workshop series on Virtual and Augmented Realities, FADIVA Workshops on 3D Interaction and Visualisation, COMIC project and more recently the INSCAPE initiative.
